In the late 18th century, top hats became popular in the West, symbolizing the noble social status of gentlemen. From the mid-19th century to World War II, top hats were the pinnacle of fashion. After the anti mainstream culture in the 1960s, with the abandonment of informal hats for men's daily lives, their usage decreased. Today, some people still wear top hats, but they are usually only seen in formal occasions.
In the late Victorian era, from 1837 to 1901, the height of the top hat decreased to between 16 and 17 centimeters. Around 1890, the top hat also had a larger crown, making it look more fitted or "sandwiched inside.". Starting around 1920, the height of the top hat was approximately 12 to 13 centimeters. Nowadays, most hover around 5 inches
